Here's what happens when nerds get bored :)

Today I found out that doing this can pull me out of a mood when someone "stepped on my toes!"  Whoot!

I wanted to see if my laser could ignite a relatively insensitive pyro mix which is similar to what IR decoy flares use

I used my 2W 445nm laser to destroy some old smokeless powder

A completely failed small bottle rocket

My 2 Watt 445nm (violet) Class 4 laser focused on a small container of moldy coffee to show it superheating the surface to boiling

A 10kV 1kW Jacob's Ladder I made a couple of years ago for almost nothing
It may become part of a Parrot repellant design I'm thinking about

Videoed the arc in a dark room at different exposures to bring out the colors then slowed
p.s. It is very exciting to play with a lethal source of electricity in the dark!

A test comparing my car headlights in late afternoon light with two 6 D-cell Maglites and a toy laser pointer (<5mW Class IIIa)

Original production 6 D-cell Maglite with halogen lamp

New production 6 D-cell Maglite (more cheaply made despite company claims) with a 1000 lumen LED mod

Toy laser pointer at best aim.  It was extremely difficult
to point it.

High power near-IR laser powered with an unusual source
870nm, max output power 1.2 Watts, Class 4 (which means extremely hazardous i.e. the invisible beam, even if reflecting off
matte surfaces and fry your retina in a fraction of a second.)

This was an idea which popped into my head while I glanced at some parts.  I thought I'd try it but didn't think it would work
and I was concerned about applying the wrong voltage and current since they're a little sensitive about such things.
I could not believe it worked and was very pleased!

I'm planning on using this as a long range covert illuminator and think it will easily reach 1000 yards.

The same UV Fluorescence of Tonic Water but flipped upside-down, slowed and with sound track

I'll do another one because this came out but I'll focus closer and do it for a bit longer.  I might even concentrate the quinine for a brighter glow. (and fresher breath)

I thought I'd see if I could use two near-IR LEDs and change resistors.  It worked!
Now I can wear it on my backpack so Spooky doesn't light me up! :P

I couldn't sleep so I did some electronic hobby work at 3am one morning

First test Fast Rope over-gloves

I have over-gloves for Fast Roping and I've been wanting to test them.  This is my first really short test to see how hot they got before I go up a big tree (without any oars)
to test them out at the length of my climbing rope.  They worked great!  With just tactical gloves, my hands started to burn just at that short distance and carrying the same weight.
I was pretty tired today and kind of worried because these are the kind of times I get into accidents and part of my mumbling to myself was wondering how long it would take for someone to find my body :D  btw - I used to rock climb so this heght doesn't seem like much to me.

I noticed how clumsy things are with the gloves, I think I'll do a short one again with extra gear and see how it works

See?  I do need an MP-5!

Trying hard not to swing back into the ladder like last time!

The last time with tac gloves, even at this short height my hands
started to burn.  This time, didn't feel a thing!

Both hands wringing inwards just like they say!

Laser on tree at 436 yards
(I was trying to see how small a spot I could focus, but it's difficult to do)

Laser at 212 yds - imaged with spotting scope

I just wanted to see how far the laser would be mostly collimated by using my camcorder with digital zoom.  I made sure no planes were around and pointed it straight up

I simply wanted to see what my Steripen UV water purifier looks like in a large container of water

...since the jug of water was out, I thought I'd use it as a target for advance, stop, assess, engage
while playing with my helmetcam! (Sig Sauer P229, Crimson Trace laser grip)

At the same time - I discovered the sound effects on my video editor!!  Shades of Ed Wood!!!

but, hey - it is serious gear - P228, CTC laser in Serpa MOLLE rig
